The off-the-shoulder trend is still going strong but now with Instagram, Bloglovin’ and Pinterest it gets overexposure, I think. So I decided to give it a break and try the backless top for a change. The experts say that the open-back trend will have a major moment this summer. Yep, I think so too. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not going to stop wearing my off-the-shoulder. At least, not cold turkey. That would be difficult since my off-the-shoulder tops have been my best summer’s friend last year. But I like the idea that my look may seem “standard” from the front and has an unexpected detail that can only be seen when I walk away. The amount of back to show is all up to you. You can adopt the open-back trend and just keep visible a small peek of skin like I did with a cut-out button-up shirt.

I encourage women over 40 to try the backless and off-the-shoulder trends. We shouldn’t stop ourselves by those silly You can/You can’t rules. After all, we all have beautiful shoulders and a lovely back! If the challenge is for you how to dress in a tasteful and sophisticated way, don’t pick your brain out: simply wear your backless top like a regular sweater with a pencil skirt or cropped pants. I also like to balance out the silhouette with flare jeans for a 70’s vibe or team it with a laid-back culottes for an effortlessly chic summer look. Headed to the office? Layer a jacket or cardigan to make it office appropriate and take it off on your way back home.
