7 Tips to help you stick to your New Year Resolutions

Good old 2017 is gone nothing more than confetti on the floor. Happy New Year! What does 2018 convey? Tons of new year resolutions that usually die before Valentine’s Day. Why? Most of us do not adequately recognize the precise concept of goal setting. Normally we establish these unrealistic goals only to fail and try again next year. The real goal is keeping your resolutions simple as well as realistic. That is why only two new year resolutions are on my list.
1. Have more “Me” time. The goal is to put aside at least one hour a day for myself. Do something “I” will enjoy. Sounds simple. Sounds realistic right? Uhmmm… When even the bathroom isn’t sacred… Not so sure. Perhaps a sign “Mom is off duty” could work.
2.Get more sleep. HAHA! Okay laughter aside this requires going to bed early which I fail epically on. How many times have you told yourself I am going to bed early tonight, next thing the rooster is crowing… And you are still blogging. Yep, sounds just like me. Where did the time go?

Be specific

A study from Statistic Brain Research Institute suggests that less than 10% of people achieve their New year’s goals. Why so much failure? People seem to set ambitious goals which are often unattainable. Better to keep it simple and realistic.
Don’t just say you’re going to lose some weight or like me “Get more sleep”. That’s is to difficult to follow and impossible to measure (yes, I am a scientific journalist. I like data). Be specific! For example, I plan to go to bed 15 minutes earlier each night until 11:00 PM become my bedtime. At this paste, I shall reach my goal… In June! Hey, there is nothing wrong with Baby Steps. 😉 Note: Starting tomorrow!

Sticking to it

Your new year resolutions do not have to end in failure. It is all about willpower and how much of it you allow yourself to consider. It’s not that we don’t have willpower, it’s that we chose not to use it. At least, not strategically. Deep stuff right! Here nevertheless are some more helpful tips.
  • Know that if you have a snag it’s okay. Your resolution is not over, you can still get back on track.
  •  Go public. By going public (IE on your blog, Facebook, etc.) you are more than likely to comply with your resolution… Because well the whole internet is tracking you now. You put it out there gotta back it up. Plus the feedback from family, friends and fans (If you are among those lucky ones who have some) can help you to stay motivated.
  • Save time in your agenda for this new habit. For example, you can do your yoga exercises before leaving to work (if you are an early bird), during your lunch break or in the evening just after your day’s work.
  • Hold on for 21 days, the minimum time required by experts to make this new habit part of your everyday life.¹

Oui, ça me ressemble.

😉 Note: Je commence demain!

Tenez bon

    1. I like your resolutions. MADE me smile! My two resolutions: More “Me time” and “Get more sleep”. Seems simple enough, but it is not that simple for me. Will have to work at it. ☺️

    1. Hi Kris! For many years that’s what I did: no resolution. But I like challenges so I thought I’ll tried a new approach this year… Yeah, I heard sleeping was even a necessity. I wish I could do without. LOL

    1. Hello Sarah, I had to take these resolutions otherwise I would go crazy! Apparently, lack of sleep can do that to you! 😄 Might be too late for me though. I’m certain that I am already, a little! Happy New Year to you too my friend!

    2. Oh, yes, lack of sleep can be dangerous and it´s very sensible of you to help yourself to more of it. And I also think that your 15 minute rule is very good – there´s no sense in trying too hard because your body just isn’t accustomed to it now. Eating a couple of dates before going to sleep might also help you getting tired earlier, they are full of tryptophan and other wonderful vitamins and minerals. 🙂

    3. Thanks for the tip Sarah. Love dates! Will try to eat some before going to sleep. And I agree with you, with Baby Steps I have better chance to reach my goal. Thanks for stopping by. It’s always a pleasure to talk to you. On my way to see your blog to see if you have post something new. It seems I have a problem with the notifications. I think I have fix it but will have to wait and see…

  1. I think New Year’s resolutions are a good thing. It means you’ve reflected on the direction you want to take with your life and no matter how old I get, this still seems important. One of mine is to learn something new everyday. The one I stuck with from last year was to develop a stretching exercise routine that I could do at home so resolutions can last and not be broken if you are really serious. Take care, this was a nice read. Terri

    1. Hi Terri, Thanks for visiting. Happy to hear from you. One New Thing a day! I love it. If you find a magic stretching exercise routine let me know! I am in need of that too. So far, the only exercises I have been able to maintain is the walking and the 50 sits up I do each morning (I have been doing that for the past 25 years now, so now it is part of my routine)… Might need to do more cardio though. Thanks so much for your nice comment. Happy New Year!

  2. Still embarrassed that I did so poorly with my ten challenges back in October….. So I think it would be unwise of me to do new year resolutions…
You do need to sleep more and take care of yourself though. I know you are working or writing at crazy hours and always seem to be awake!
Love reading you as always dear friend and I hope your 2018 is wonderful. 😀❤️
Now I need to work out why I got no notification about this post! I thought I had fixed that.🙁

    1. Hello Darren, May I remind you that you have not done so poorly on your challenges… You have been doing well on your movie night (almost got through session 2 of Penny Dreadful), you are being more organised about selling your artwork, you did buy some clothes (you got yourself the purple floral shirt, didn’t you? Good choice too. It’s the color of the year according to Pentone) and you did renew your passport. Okay, you have not achieve wash-board by Christmas but perhaps for Valentine’s day? (Susan would love that I bet) And you have not got your nails painted yet either (as far as I know)… You see, you’ve done pretty good! About the notification of posts, I have notice recently that I have the same problem with four of my WordPress friends and I’m trying to fix it. If you find a way, let me know… All the best to you and Susan for 2018!

    1. What a great idea, a sign “wife of duty” for the laundryroom! Ha, ha… For a second, I thought you were gonna say for the bedroom. Laundryroom is much better! Thanks ortensia for this lovely comment. Happy new year to you too.

  6. First of all I love these pictures. You look stunning girl. I love your post too. You are right it is all about keeping it simple and achievable and not letting ourselves go back to bad habits. I lost a lot of weight last year and I want to keep it off. However, over Christmas and new year I was back to my bad eating habits. I must not fall in that trap again. I am still exercising everyday and intend to keep it that way hopefully. Happy New year my friend may 2018 be full of love, health and happiness. xoxo Cris

    1. Hello Cris, So happy to hear from you my friend. Hope you and the kids are doing great. I have been sick but I’m beginning to feel better now. I know what you mean with bad habits. 😉 Easy to fall in that trap! That’s way I go with Baby Steps. Thanks so much for reading and your lovely comment. All the best to you and your family for 2018. xoxo On my way to see your new post!

  7. Dominique, these sound like two very sensible resolutions and even doable! Yes, definitely make that sign and I’ll join you in trying to get more sleep…I’m sure I sleep less now than when my son was young. I used to make pages of New Years resolutions as young and yep, only kept one or two. Last year I decided not to make any all but caved and did make one…to keep writing every day in my newly gifted five year sentence a day diary. I managed this and am now onto Year two!! Wishing you lots of luck with your two promises to yourself….let us know how you get on!xx

    1. I will make that sign… One more DIY to do… Oh well, it is a must! Yes, I know what you mean. I have not taken any resolution in the past 10 years for the same reasons but I believe one or two resolutions are indeed doable… The way everything turned out for you as writing goes, you must be very glad that you caved and did decide to keep writing every day… Congrats, Annika!
