When Fashion and Nature Collide – 7 Outfit Ideas

People are naturally drawn to the bright colors and organic look of flowers. And the view of animals often brings an Awww feeling as well. Personally, my fashion aesthetic is rooted in part in my love for nature and art. The colors and patterns of flowers and critters always inspire me new outfit ideas! When I pointed that out to Roda, from Growing Self, in a comment on her blog she replied So cool! Let’s do this. And that’s how the idea of this special project started. I was already planning to style some outfits based on Darren’s flower pictures so naturally we asked The Arty Plantsman to team with us. Another friend of ours soon joined us: Lisa, from Lismore Paper. We are the Fabulous Four.
The third wednesday of each month you will see outfits styled by me, and art from Lisa, that were inspired by Roda’s critter pictures and Darren’s flower pictures. With the spirit of protecting nature I will pull together my outfits with clothing already available in my wardrobe. If purchases are to be made, these will come from vintage shops and thrift stores or from socio-eco-friendly brands.
Without any further ado, take a look at these inspiring flower and critter pictures that have been hitting the spot for me this month. I am sure they will unearth some passion or idea that you can put into your spring outfits as well, even if you do not use these particular designs. Get yourself a coffee or a tea, and enjoy this little ride over the rainbow.

Nous sommes The Fabulous Four.

I have used a color palette generator to recreate the color schemes of each image. Note that sometimes it avoids an element in the picture in order to make the color palette more harmonious. Finding perfect color harmonies in nature is not always possible. Nature is chaotic. But the magic is out there. Flowers and animals are a great source for inspirational color schemes.
I am drawn to the bright and fun colors of Geissorhiza radians. This palette juxtaposes a lively red and bright purple against white and a touch of black. It naturally draws attention and is definitely harmonious. This combination of colors inspired me to create many outfits. Here are three of them.

In the first picture, I paired a leather black top to balance out the gingham 50’s style skirt feel. Vintage pieces bring a very distinctive fashion statement but you don’t want to look like a retro postcard. The tric is to balance the uniqueness of the vintage with a contemporary piece to give your ensemble a modern flair. The dark purplish blue trench (unfortunately, I don’t have a bright purple one) draped around the shoulders adds sophistication to the outfit. I completed the look with gold strappy sandals and a white bag to illuminate the other colors. I wore this outfit in a similar way last year as the photos taken in my garden show. Instead of a leather top I paired the skirt with a black button-down. White shoes and a black bag completed the outfit.

I am keen on the amalgamation of sensual fabrics such as silk and cashmere, masculine tailor pieces like this coat above, unique color or pattern combinations and graceful motion. Whenever my outfit combines all these items I feel sexy, confident and powerful… And Yes, I need to be able to move at ease in my clothing. Because being sexy is also about the way you walk.

Love the duality of feminine and tomboy. Edgy leather jacket and relaxed corduroy pants mixed with precious earrings and a shinny gold bag. Oh, yes — Opposites attract. This is a perfect outfit for the weekend.

I like being feminine but not overly girly. And that’s exactly how the Iris Elegantissima inspired me. The name of the flower and the ocher hue set the mood: Elegance. For this outfit, I layered two fluid dresses and add botanical shoes. These might be flats but they have a feminine pointy toe! I wore only one statement earring to bring some asymmetry to the look. I complete the ensemble with a bandana and a wooden vintage basket, which both the texture and color remind the detail in the petals.

The warm earth tone of the coat brings a nice pop to this palette. The white and classic cut of the pants provide a refined base for the look, allowing the cute green & black polka dots blouse to really stand out without being too flashy.

Never underestimate the power of black and white. This combination, especially when paired with pattern, creates a cool and refined feel.  Just add some stunning earrings and you’ll be a stylish chick!

    1. Thank you so much Margit. Roda’s chicken, Sweetie, is indeed a gorgeous chick! The other creature is cute but apparently it is a serious pest. Just to be clear: I’m talking about the spotted cucumber beetle not me! Hope everything is better for you. On my way to read you. I feel I have neglected you dear friend. xoxo

I totally love how the different types blend all together, thus forming a very unique blogging experience. You all can be so proud of yourself! 6. Hello Dominique!
I discovered your blog through Darren. Love the idea of this collaboration and the outfits that you’ve put together here! My favourite is the one that is inspired by the Iris Elegantissima. Recently I’ve been looking into sustainable fashion as well. I love thrift shopping because it is like a treasure hunt – you never know what you will find!

    1. Hello Sophie! I know who you are. I always read your comments on Darren’s blog and find them very interesting. Thank you for stopping by. BTW The outfit you mentioned is also my favourite, probably because it combines textures and two of my favourite colours, green and rust. Feel the same about thrift shopping. Makes me feel like Indiana Jones in the search of the graal.
