Fall’s Hottest Animal Prints and How to Wear Them

If you haven’t fallen back in love with animal prints, NOW is the time. This season, leopard, tiger, snakeskin and zebra patterns are one of top Autumn/Winter Fashion Trends (again). But for 2018 the mix and match are bolder than ever. It’s “De Bon Goût” (Translation: stylish) to wear the animal spots and stripes with bold colours, head-to-toe and even combine them together. Here’s everything you need to know to help you style these alluring prints without anyone raising an eyebrow.

From classic leopard coats, snakeskin booties, tiger dresses and zebra-striped pants, there are many ways you can rock animal prints. I have spotted (pun intended) lots of different colours too.

If you only buy one piece this season, the classic topper is a good investment that you’ll want to wear through fall and winter.

Top it off with a statement coat

There’s a reason the leopard print is timeless. It’s easy to work into your wardrobe. Wear your animal print coat with a striped or graphic tee for a retro-sporty vibes (see the outfit here). You can also approach this look by pairing it with a bright colour. Here, I have combined two of Fall’s top trends in one outfit – tangerine crush and leopard.
For an instant chic look, I also like to pair my leopard coat with a rich red turtleneck.

The mix of red and leopard brings luxe to any look. Uhmmm… I could go for this red leopard-print wrap dress that can take me from day to night. The Ganni’s patterned chiffon wrap dress cost $315 CAN and is available at net-a-porter.

This is the face I make when I’m thinking about buying new clothes: Should I buy it or not? I really like the cut and the pattern of this chiffon dress. I could wear it for work with booties. Oh, it would be soooo lovely for Christmas too… But do I really need it?

OK, let’s calm down and take a few days to think about this. Here’s what I do to prevent impulsive purchases: 3 Things to Do before you go Shopping

Sorry. It’s hard to stay focus but I’m now back with the topic of this blogpost…

Step further into the jungle

Ever since I saw Richard Quinn’s coat the maximalist in me has been dreaming of wild things (I mean, more than usual).
richard-quinn-coat
Richard Quinn, Moda Operandi
Winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Award for british Design this year, Richard Quinn’s pairings are provocative. This animal printed coat will definitely take any outfit to the next level. Nope. You won’t blend, dear. But you will make some damage… With the Royal seal of approval.
  • Pair your wild-animal-print with solid colours to really let it stands out. This will also keep your look from feeling too busy.
Remember: What used to be consider a faux-pas is now a trendy thing amongst the fashion set. Your jungle and Sahara patterns act nowadays as neutrals in your wardrobe. They do mix well with floral prints and stripes and even with other animal patterns. Yes, I know, It’s not for everyone. But if Anna Wintour does it then It must be OK, right?

Who What Wear
  • An easy way to pull it off is to distribute your prints, i.e. one on the top and one on the bottom.
  • Use neutral colours to calm things down and balance the outfit.
  • Put a fresh spin on your animal prints by combining your statement piece with a crisp white blouse or booties. Pastel hues such as blue, pink, yellow and lilac also mix well with these prints. Try it!

Style with powerful Extras

If print-on-print is just too much for you, just add an accent to your outfit for an edgy yet sophisticated effect. Think leopard ankle boots, faux-snakeskin bag, calf-hair pumps… These are perfect for those of you who prefer a more subtle look.

You can make most look fabulous with the right pair of shoes or boots and a nice handbag. Just trust your animal instinct! Mine is eying these two accessories below.

Add a dash of Zebra or Tiger Coolness to your wardrobe

tigeroatBazargettyimages

Tiger pattern is THE new trendy animal print for Fall and Winter as evidenced by the street looks during Fashion Weeks in New York, London, Milan and Paris. This pattern reminds me of Garfield and instantly triggers the playful side of me. I really like the Twin-Set’s dress below.
But between tiger and zebra my heart goes for the Black & White print. I particularly like it on dresses and skirts. There’s something deliciously cool about a feminine piece with zebra stripes… That can’t never be out of line.

  1. Oh My Goodness this post has my head spinning! So much inspiration and great advice. Dominique, I love the leopard statement coat paired with the warm red top & the calf hair heels paired with the cool blue purse. As a “Bold Minimalist,”(I think I just made that up..lol😄) the solid and animal print combo really speaks to my spirit and inspires me. I’d love to add a statement coat like that to my wardrobe once I start back purchasing fabrics and clothing again. In the meantime, I’ve added a pair of snake print heels and calf hair leopard print heels to my wardrobe this season. I love both pair and look forward to wearing them now and in the seasons to come.❤

    1. Haha… I’m still laughing at your comment. I know exactly what you mean as I call myself a practical maximalism minimalism! That embodies my signature style, which can be translated in three words: Polished, fun and feminine. You made great purchases, Angie. These shoes are classics and will work with most of your outfits. You’ll be able to wear them for many seasons to come. You impress me so much with your seamstress skills. I cannot wait to see the coat that you will soon create. Thanks so much for your lovely comment. xoxo

  3. Yay, haven’t had to take a week to scroll down to find empty space to leave a comment of totally fabulous post Dominique 🙂

That coat by Quinn is awesome – the real trick would be what to wear with it underneath, minimalistic or conservative or wild things like a Cyndi Lauper outfit – truly beautiful 🙂

    1. Haha -The misfortune of some makes the happiness of others! 😉 Seriously, I just published the post. I hope that by tomorrow there will be more comments. By the way, I would wear only jeans and a t-shirt under this beautiful coat… Nothing else is necessary, I think. Thanks Rory!

    1. Yes Alison, this is the year where you have to dare to incorporate these prints into your outfits. Start with an accessory such as a belt, a bag or boots and you’ll see how it adds elegance to your looks. The effect is striking even with jeans and a t-shirt. Try it! xoxo

These are versatile essentials that help create elegant and stylish sets. Thank you for your lovely feedback as always. Bonne semaine Sarah! xoxo

  5. I enjoy your style as always! Glad to see animal print with red is still in because I like the way it looks together. Great post Dominique. 🤗

    1. Yes, red animal print is still IN. I love this mix and match as well. If you want to differ from the classical colours that normally go well with leopard prints, then go for army green or mint green, which really work beautifully with animal prints. Thanks so much Christy for visiting my blog. Have a wonderful week ahead.

  7. Great information. I love leopard print, wearing it often with denim blue, olive, burgundy. Have never put it with red, but why not? My next animal to capture is zebra. I’m drawn to it, it’s kind of like stripes, but with more artsy attitude.

Thanks for stopping by my blog to say hi. The internet is fun, isn’t it?

    1. I’m crushing on zebra pattern as well. I have an old trench that I recently styled with colour booties. I will show the picture on our November edition of When Fashion and Nature Collide collaboration. I just posted the October issue on my blog. The WP community is wonderful. Glad I met you and will visit you again later. Thanks for visiting.

    1. Firstly, I want to say I’m so sorry for taking so long to reply to your lovely comment. I had some computer problems over the past few days, which prevented me from responding to your comment and publishing new posts. Don’t shy away from it. Start with a pattern accessory or one piece of clothing. This will add texture to your look I promise. Plus, this way you can’t make any fashion faux. By the way jewel hues such as teal look fabulous too with leopard print. Have fun mixing and matching and trust your instinct. If you like it and the outfit makes you feel good then you should wear it. Thank you so much for reading and commenting. Hope I will see you soon again. Keep well.
