When Fashion and Nature Collide – October Edition

Hello!
I love Halloween, a colourful celebration that punctuates autumn with a touch of pleasant madness. No tricks, just lots of treats! That is what you’ll find in our October edition of When Fashion and Nature Collide. This Halloween issue holds a special meaning as all the fashion photos were done by my dear friend Darren while he was visiting Montreal. He captured the beauty of my hometown like a Pro! A big thanks goes to another friend of ours, Dee-Dee, who’s patience and laughter gives us renewed energy. Thankfully, she even helped us carrying all the clothing and accessories for the shoot. Also, I want to point out that there are three spider pictures in this issue. These peculiar yet stunning creatures are more beautiful than frightful, but if you have an arachnophobia be warned. We guaranteed thrills, but not creepy ones. We propose to you lots of fashion fun and outfit ideas, clever Halloween DIY and, of course, magical bewitching photography and artworks that are full of spirit. Oh, there is also a surprise. Keep scrolling, scrolling, scrolling…
Note: In case you’ve not seen these capsules before, the When Fashion and Nature Collide project is a monthly collaboration with three of my WP friends: Roda of Growing Self / now at Indigo Acres Apiary, Lisa of Lismore Paper / @lismorepaperco and Darren of The Arty Plantsman / @artyplantsman
The third wednesday of each month you can see outfits styled by me, and art from Lisa, that were inspired by Roda’s critter pictures and Darren’s flower pictures. With the spirit of protecting nature I pull together my outfits with clothing already available in my wardrobe. When purchases are to be made, these come from vintage shops and thrift stores or from socio-eco-friendly brands.
Enjoy our Halloween issue!

The Fall essential update: A cozy plaid blanket poncho. If you want to master transitional dressing, all you need are a few key pieces to layers. The blanket poncho is one of them. It can be worn over just about anything, plus autumnal hues look stunning with everything.

Everybody’s wearing… A Western piece!

If you want to add a bit of whimsical to your look opt for this season’s hottest western items. With fringed denim, saddle bags, cowboy boots, big buckle or suede shirt you’ll be rocking the cowgirl vibes.
Note: I had just got back from a long walk on country roads before taking these pics. If I had been walking on Rodeo Drive (I wish!), I would have swapped my sneakers for these Fendi cowboy boots below (I wish for that too!) And I wouldn’t have said “No” to the Anine Bing & Janesa Leoné Zane hat either #ABxJL.
I have rounded up some great western pieces for you. Yee-Haw!

I spy… Spiders and a bright colour coat!

Oh, the cool All Black outfit… This is what instantly comes to mind when we want to add a rocker’s flair to our look and feel cool. Sometimes, an all black outfit can be challenging to wear when you’re over 40. I suggest you combine your black pieces with a top in a similar tone but different fabric and one or two classy bright accessories. This will add some texture to your outfit and you’ll be making a modern statement with your look.

Note: In the world of spiders, being colourful with a wicked pattern is not about flirtation. It’s about sending a clear message to predators: “Don’t come near me, I’m dangerous!” In the world of fashion, the art of the mix and matched is synonymous with individual style and used by fashionistas to communicate their artistic skills. Don’t be afraid. Brighten up your look with a bold take on classic Fall’s coat.

Cast an enchanting spell

The Calochortus obispoensis
Calochortus obispoensis, Calochortus obispoensis, Calochortus obispoensis… Try to say the name of this flower three times very fast. Sounds like you’re incanting a magic formula, right? 👻🎃👻🎃👻

I know Halloween is upon us and we enjoy decorating our house and outdoor scenes with creepy and gruesome creatures, but we still can go for joyful and giggles. This casual off-duty look will cast an enchanting spell over your weekend. You can always rely on a cropped top, jeans, and a fedora. Sunflowers are optional but Oh, so much fun!

Gothic glamour

The raven

Ahhh, ravens. They bring an Edgar-Allan-Poe-Mysterious-Feel and instantly set me in a gothic glamour mood. This vintage silk coat-dress with Chinese embroidery creates exactly the dramatic and stylish look that Lisa’s artwork inspired me. The fishnet stockings add the touch of gothic I love. See here another look I have created with this vintage coat-dress.

Did you know that the original function of the Jack O’Lanterns was to repel evil spirits. A bit like the native American dream catchers.

A midi skirt will take you a long way. Wear it with a T-shirt if the temperature where you live is warm or with a sweater and tall boots. Extra points if you play with texture, whether with fishnet stockings, snakeskin boots or a leopard stole.

Let it sparkle

This awesome Black Cat artwork from Lisa makes a great October 31 theme Canvas Tote and T-shirt. Just have it print or better yet do it yourself with an iron-on transfer paper. The artwork can also be use as a Halloween candy bag. Hope I’ll inspire you to make these at home.

I had fun doing these easy DIY projects and mood decoration in my house with Lisa’s Black Cat artwork. See my post here for details about all of these projects.

And now, here’s our surprise…

The four of us are disguised. I just love everyone’s costume. Wondering what is my disguise? I’m a bucket filler. My bucket is full and I feel great. Thanks to you all! Your kind words, hugs and gestures have fill my bucket. But guess what… When you fill someone’s bucket, you fill your own bucket too. The more you fill buckets, the quicker your own bucket fills up. A full bucket gives us a positive outlook and makes us feel strong and confidante. Let’s all be a bucket filler!
Happy Halloween!

    1. Your lovely words go straight to my hear. You really have a way with words! Wish more men had your talent. Here’s an idea: write a book on How to speak to women (to make them fall in your arms). Thanks so much for your beautiful comment, Shalini. xoxo

    2. I know that you have clicked beautiful pics, Darren. But for me, from the very beginning, it has been Dominique who has resonated in my heart. She is beautiful no doubt, but it is her inner beauty, her attitude, her presence, the way she carries herself, that forces me to only look at her. She just shines.
Apologies to the rest of the team. But for me, I have a very, very soft corner for her. ❤️

    2. I agree with Dominique Lisa. We are a team and we all inspire each other. I love your artwork and we both love the same things in nature – hence our swapping IG posts on sea creatures and bugs etc. Love to you😍

    Bravo et bisous Dominique! !

    1. And it was a pleasure having you with us! I wish I had took a pic of you doing your yoga while waiting for the shots to be done. It was very impressive watching you. Wow! You are really flexible. About Darren’s pictures. I admit I am really pleased with the outcome. I think I never felt so beautiful in my life. Keep well dear friend. xoxo

    1. Thanks Ortensia! What are those yellow boots? Dream catcher! They elongate the legs! But I certainly won’t wear them in Winter. Otherwise, all I’ll catch is a cold.

    2. I have a pair up my knees and must say I love them but those ……😍problem is if they are cold for winter and obviously hot for summer when do you wear them?in autumn of course ,that is also my favorite season so not a problem at the end 😜

    3. Knowing you a bit I believe you will agree with me: Every woman should have at least two pairs of boots. One for everyday and one for special occasions. These are part of the second category, obviously. You have to read Darren’s recent blogpost. He tells a funny story about my over-the-knee-boots.

    5. Thank you, Ortensia. Take two pills for your migraine, lots of coffee and return as soon as possible to work on your book … It’s selfish on my part, but I cannot wait to read you! Keep well. xoxo

  6. Such a super post, Dominique! And how very special that Darren made all the shots – he’s a brilliant photographer!! I just love those pumpkin pics, you’ve got such a wonderful smile. 😍 Spiders are not really my thing though I appreciate their help gardenwise and they can also look fantastic as jewellery. 😉
The plaid blanket poncho is so lovely as is that floral print dress. And who doesn’t like wearing fishnet tights from time to time? So sexy! 😉
Happy Autumn, dear friend, and I hope you’re feeling better – bronchitis is awful, please take good care of yourself! xoxo 💕

    1. I’m starting to feel better. Thank you Sarah. It was really special to do the pictures with Darren. We hope to repeat the experience soon. The poncho is handmade by Quebec craftsmen. It’s a piece that I like a lot. I like all the pictures of this edition. I would have trouble saying which one I prefer. Keep well. xoxo

    1. Thank you so much Linda. Darren’s pics are among the best pictures taken of me ever! I think your favourite pic is the one where I’m standing on the stairs, face partly in shadow and the buildings in the background. My favorite photo of this shoot is the one used to announce this post. But wait I still have a few other photos that he took that are stunning. I will show them soon. ❤️ Big hugs and lots of love!
