Styling an outfit requires accessories that has the potential to tie everything together. It is the most challenging thing about creating a pristine look. The same challenge comes when you are decorating. You need a unique piece that anchors a room but also some special decoration items that make your living space personal. Fashion and home Decor are similar in many ways. They both constitute expression of self. We express ourselves in fashion, same goes for Interior decoration. Both reveal a lot about who we are too. Whether it is with a dress or a table, a necklace or a sofa, our love of certain colours we wear and prints we decorate our homes with are hallmarks of our style. Ever contemplate that? Take a look at the clothes in your wardrobe. Think about how your home is decorated. Is there a resemblance? It should. Because if you love prints or a specific colour, you shouldn’t be just wearing them. They should be part of your house as well. It’s a simple way to lift your mood, and to make you feel good each day.
Here’s two pictures to illustrate this close relationship. First photo is of me and the second one is of my living room. Do you see the link?

_MG_8403The home I share with my hubby and my two kids is filled with a mix of eclectic vintage furnitures, texture rugs, pillows, wallpaper, floral and botanical artworks, and soft-hued walls with drop of colours here and there. These patterns, shapes, colours and textures are the ultimate backdrop for my wardrobe. Both my wardrobe and home decor influence one another and the vibe reflects who I am. In my case, It’s all about blending patterns and colours without predetermined rules, but yet always with comfort and timeless elegance in mind. So it’s not much of a surprise that I like to wear vintage clothes with modern accessories. But that doesn’t mean my contemporary pieces get lost into the mix. Especially those floral embellished Stuart Weitzman booties I paired with, well, pretty much everything… And Yes, they match with my living room. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying you have to wear floral pattern just because your wallpaper has flowers, but you sure can get inspiration from it and create a look that reminds you of the beloved item.

From Runway through Interior Design

Fashion and Interior decor have often been curious bedfellows. I believe the true mesh happened when famous fashion designers in the likes of Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Oscar de la Renta, Calvin Klein and Tory Burch started expanding their fashion talent into more than dressing fashion models. It’s now your living room! That’s right many of your well-known fashion designers have now ventured into interior design often bringing some of that back into their own fashion lines. The link between fashion and home decor is blurry indeed.
A perfect example of this was in the top spring fashion trends of 2015. This is where fashion truly blended with home decor, and probably vice versa. With the social media, the world of fashion and decor keep merging together because the style trends are readily accessible. Everyone is seeing the same things at the same time.
Coral is a popular color this year? You will find this color seeping into the latest home interior decor too from pillows to wall hangings. Fashion and interior design are nowadays closely linked in the way that each inspires the other in each others work.
I have compiled some images from Designer’s collection and matched them with home decor to show you the threads that link both worlds. Enjoy!

    I love the way you think and your aesthetic sense, which is why you are a joy to work with. Your home is lovely and very ‘you’ – and I say that as someone who knows you quite well. The booties are cute!

    The way you have matched the fashion to home decor ideas is fascinating and a joy to see. Hard to pick a favourite but the Rebecca Taylor and Missoni outfits I especially like despite being very different from each other.

    3. Pretty simple process actually… I start with a fashion or interior decor pic that I like and then search the web sites for an image that match regarding colors, patterns or style. The search can take hours sometime but when I find a great match it’s like I found a treasure!

  10. This makes sense. My house is in colors that will always match any decor and season-many of my clothes are the same. My house is liberally coated in cat hair-as is much of the fabric worn by the inhabitants! My house is full of older comfy furniture that needs updated-a good portion of my clothing comes from thrift stores and gets updated there! I’ll have to pay more attention when I visit friends homes to see if this holds true there as well!!!

  13. What a wonderful post.

    There has always been that connection l feel, long before the design houses decided to up their game and include indoor decor. People just weren’t aware they were doing it at the time, it was one of those things that happened like when two people walking and talking and suddenly they sync into each other so that you can see that their bodies are mimicking each other’s footfall. They are not symbolically aware they are performing the synchronised walking but they are. This also can be found in their house.

    I am not particulary orientated on home as a term, as in l have an inability to see a house as a home, however my Mother and indeed Suze do. They therefore are completely able to sync their minds in with their internal home decor and whether they are aware that there is an uncanny balance between what they wear and what their house does, let’s be more direct. Your personality will of course reflect in everything you do and touch and will appear in other formats.

    My Mother forever an elegant lady now 78 wears a distinct combo of timeless classic pieces and so too does her house.

    Despite me with my home disorder and not being able to sync properly when l was a bachelor living in my ‘pad’ for want of a better word, l had a very ecclectic mixture of colours and patterns versus solids and plains living around me, and that was because l was and dressed like a Victorian Dandy for many years, employing a large wardrobe of styles to compliment my mind, so too did the pad.

And I´m not in the slightest surprise that you have observed the deep connections between fashion and interior design with your keen eye for detail. 😉 Your home does look indeed very “you” – meaning beautiful, elegant, warm, welcoming and timeless chic. 🙂 I just love those boots!! So cute! There are lots of books and pieces of art in my home, it´s a colorful mix I´d say, and my clothes tend to be too sometimes, though I also love wearing black from head to toe but with a little splash of color for accent. 😉 Oh, and comfy! Definitely that! If I had it my way though, I´d probably running around in historic costumes from the 18th century up to the Roaring Twenties and Sixties. 😉

    1. Thank you Sarah. I already imagined your house with lots of art pieces and books. It could not be otherwise since you are an avid reader and talented artist. When you come to visit me I will take you to a huge costume shop specializing in historic costumes. You can rent the costumes for an hour or two, wander the streets of the city and take pictures. I have never done it but this could be a fun thing to do. 😲

    2. Oh! That sounds awesome! We could dress like Victorian Ladys and haunt those cemeteries you were telling me about! 😉 I visited a costume shop in Windsor (near London) once, but you could only put it on in the shop and have your picture taken in it, not venture outside.
      And I´d love to wear something Steampunk like!! You know, those lovely corsets and fishnet stockings, a top hat and huge brass goggles… 😀

  31. It’s interesting, I feel like trends transcend fashion into other industries such as interior design. I noticed that while the fifties Style was hitting the runways, every furniture store and online boutique was presenting mid-century modern…naturally I gave in to both. 🤓

  34. Was a big thing in the 70s. I just love watching the old US shows such as Columbo and see the way fashion and furniture blend or often don’t as the life of the show progressed. Love the post!
